New Defence, 2018.
I first showed this work as part of a pop up group show called New: Defence at the Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury, Essex in April 2018. The fort itself is a fascinating space, built between 1861 and 1874 it was virtually obsolete by the time it was finished and has had a colourful history. Along with 8 other artists, I was invited to make work in response to the fort and its historical archive. I was inspired by stories of families who made the fort their home in the 1950s and 60s, and used objects from the archive to create anthropomorphic photographic sculptures that stand as gatekeepers to a paradoxical space.
