Everlasting, 2016

I have always been fascinated with tattoos – ever since I was a little kid. I’m interested in the language and symbolism of tattoos and how a tattoo design can be repeated over and over again so it almost becomes a cultural icon or symbol.

Essentially this project is about taking inspiration from these tattoo designs and recreating them as photographs – to take something that is a specific medium and see whether that same visual language can translate into photography.

I focused on traditional Western/ sailor designs for this series – swallows, daggers, hearts and roses, and worked with predominantly mass produced toy like props to reference the repetition of themes and the often comic and cartoon like nature of this genre of tattoo.
